Three things people don’t know about you?

I am a mining graduate and worked in mines as my first job. English is my third language that I picked up pretty late. My mother tongue is Maithili. My favorite songs continue to be old Hindi songs from Mukesh and I still recall most of the lyrics.

What’s your greatest fear?

Lack of motivation: waking up in the morning but not able to find interesting enough things to do for the day.

What is your greatest achievement?

Getting my first book “Transit Lounge” published. This is a memoir of 15 years of my travel to 30 different countries. I took 5 years to intermittently write it and later approach various publishers. I was happy when it finally got published.

High point of your life?

When I cleared CAT and finally got admission in IIM Lucknow.

Low point of your life

There are quite a few, the good thing about them are the low points always precede something great.

Who are your favorite authors?

I like Sanjeev Sanyal’s writing. He comes from a fresh perspective- something like an economist writing a history.

Is there a book you love to reread?

I like ‘Animal Farm’ from George Orwell. A short fictional account that seems so real in our day to day life even in today’s political and social setup.

One Superpower you wish you had?

Ability to influence people without any direct control

Your epitaph would read? /Last line in your biography would be?

I had dreams and I lived through them.

If you had a time machine to take you back to any country and any time period, where would you choose to be for your childhood, adolosent , adult life and silver years?

I have some interest in Indology, I understand India was prospering and harmonious civilization before the external invasions started. I would have loved to live in that period.

If you could acquire any talent, what would it be?

May be music

Which book you wish you had written ?

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse

When and where do you write ?

Mostly late evening, in my house during weekdays and weekends.Sometimes, I do write in the waiting areas and lounges when I am travelling.

Silence or music?

Mostly silence and music in silence.

One phrase that you use most often?

Be positive

Do you have a writing ritual / superstition?

Writing block – If I am writing regularly and then it stops one day for some reason, it takes a long gap to restart it again.

Do you have one sentence of advice for new writers?

Write like no one will ever read, edit like everyone is going to read. Don’t edit when you are writing first few pages, just write.
